Official Opening & Lantern Parade

Paper Lantern Procession – Friday 27 November 2009

Lantern Procession 2007

On Friday 27th November, to mark the opening of the Christmas Market and ice-rink there will be a grand parade of huge and colourful paper lanterns through the town at 6.30pm. The parade will start at The Great Hall and process down the High Street, into the Outer Close of the Cathedral and then into the Inner Close where the procession will assemble for a visually spectacular launch of the Christmas Market and ice-rink. This will be followed by the Official Opening of the Christmas Market and Ice-Rink. Prizes will be awarded for the best lanterns. Judging at 5.45pm at the Great Hall.

Lantern Making Workshops
Various venues, throughout November.

In order to teach children, young people and even families how to make a lantern for the Procession, a series of workshops is being organised around the city where you can come and learn how to make these wonderful paper lanterns.

In addition to this, if your school, youth group, scout group or association would like to organise a workshop, Waitrose is offering funding to help with the costs of tuition and materials, to any such organisation who would like to arrange their own workshop.
